Coal kills. Yes it does. 25,000 Americans dead per year from coal pollution.

The proposed 1500 MW Peabody Coal power plant near Belleville, IL relies on outdated technology and will be far dirtier than comparable new proposed plants. A zoning hearing for this plant is planned for February. The plant can be stopped. For more information, click here, or call Steve at 618-530-4842.

In addition to the deadly effects of mercury, NOx, SOx, and other pollutants, this plant would release huge amounts of carbon dioxide, CO2. Haven't they heard of global warming?

Climate change may be more abrupt and irreversible than even recent forecasts have predicted. The melting of the Arctic ice cap is already well underway. Massive amounts of methane may be released as a result, and methane is more than 20 times as potent a greenhouse gas as CO2. Killing thousands of people a year is one thing, but wouldn't it be prudent to learn more about the science before investing billions of dollars in new coal plants that may be driving the planet into environmental catastrophe? Wind power and other renewable energy sources, solar heating, and conservation are very viable means of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. There's no need to take such wild risks with our future.
